Netflix & SPC: Orange is the new Black Cocktail - Sweet Potato Chronicles

Netflix & SPC: Orange is the new Black Cocktail

Today, I made cinnamon raspberry pancakes, batch-cooked some things for this week’s school lunches and a vegetarian chili we’ll eat mid-week. Then I did two loads of laundry, cleaned the kitchen and refereed about nine inter-sibling smack downs. All before noon. Sound familiar? Of course it does… if you’re visiting SPC, you’re probably a parent. So you know all about the endless chores involved in bringing up kids. Sometimes I think of myself as a shark: I’ve got to keep moving, keep moving, keep moving, or I might drown.

So, I thought it was nice that our pals over at Netflix asked us to create a recipe this month that is just for moms. Taking some “me time” can feel impossible, but is so important for parents. A day at the spa might be as unlikely as winning the lottery, but carving out just a little window of time that’s not about everyone else really does re-energize you and make you a better parent. In thinking of a recipe to suit this theme we certainly weren’t going to send you back to the kitchen to cook! So of course our minds went to cocktails. It’s exactly what the doctor ordered when you’re taking a little time for yourself and enjoying a good, old-fashioned binge-watch session of Orange in the New Black. As I’m writing this post, the new season is still a week away and I’m already so psyched. I love watching movies with my kids but it’s important for my well-being to have some viewing time that is purely adult, you know? Yes, you could make this drink virgin and share it with the family…. But don’t, okay? This one is just for you.

Orange Chill

(makes 8 drinks, okay, maybe you want to share with a couple of friends)

1 cup water
1 cup sugar
3 or 4 fresh mint leaves
1 x 12 oz (355 ml) frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
½ x 12 oz (355 ml) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
1 oz (29 ml) rum
sparkling water or soda

Method

In a small pot, place the water, sugar and mint leaves over heat. Give everything a stir and allow it to simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Pluck the mint leaves out and discard. You’ve just made a simple syrup, the beginning of many great cocktails. Aren’t you fancy?

In a freezer proof container (can be a cake tin or a Tupperware container) mix together the two juice concentrates and the simple syrup. Either place a lid on top or cover with plastic wrap. Put it in the freezer for at least 4 hours.

Take out your orange mixture, which will be starting to set. Use a fork to rake the surface and create some snow-y slush. Spoon 1/3 of a cup of your orange slush into a cocktail glass. Top with your shot of rum and then top up with sparkling water or soda. Kick back, sip and relax – we know you’ve earned it.
